The largest prime number known is 21398269-1, and it's 909,526 decimal digits long. It was discovered in January 1998 by Ronald Clarkson, a college sophomore in California with a 200MHz PC and a modem. The second and third largest primes were discovered the same way, by netizens donating their unused computer cycles to a higher cause-- specifically the Great Internet Mersenne Prime Search, or GIMPS. |
